About adhocspeakers

adhocspeakers.com presents loudspeaker designs based on my U.S. Patent 7,925,036 B2, along with the audio gear, technical documentation, and maker resources needed to build and understand them.

My background includes audio electronics, loudspeaker design, testing, manufacturing, and engineering work at Genesis Physics and Advent Corporation, followed by software engineering management at Meyer Sound. That work later expanded into embedded systems, software architecture, materials, and product development. I have been a member of the Audio Engineering Society since 1980, AES Member No. 23072.

The Flow/ family grew from an acoustic problem I first pursued in 1996: fitting a nearly 1.8-meter quarter-wave line into a compact loudspeaker. The first printed proof of concept appeared in 2003. Successive three-fold, four-fold, and six-fold versions followed. Flow/1 is the sixth expression of the invention and the fourth six-fold realization. Its enclosure was optimized around the Tang Band W3-1876S low-frequency driver.

Flow/1 established the foundation. Flow/2 is its evolution and the current design, extending it with twisted gyroidic-like vanes and seven tuned Helmholtz resonators. These features are designed to address selected higher-order tube modes while preserving useful low-frequency quarter-wave loading.

The name reflects both purpose and lineage: “Flow” describes the controlled movement of air behind the driver, and “/1” honors Advent Corporation and Henry Kloss’s Advent/1. adhocspeakers.com documents the designs, the reasoning behind them, and the resources that let makers build, measure, and understand their own loudspeakers.
